The course is situated 2 miles south of the city and can be reached easily via the major road networks in all directions. Autumn heralds the National Hunt season at Carlisle and the course has provided a proving ground for many subsequent successes. One of the most famous horses of all time, Red Rum, won at Carlisle before each of his successes in the Grand National.

Its place in the history of horseracing assured, Carlisle was the first racecourse in the country to implement Tote betting, in 1929; a pools based betting system found in all Britain’s courses today. History comes easy to Carlisle but it is the on-going developments at the course which make each visit as enjoyable as possible and in 2002 the new Grandstand was opened, providing a great many hospitality opportunities to complement the excellent racing. Admission to the Premier Enclosure or the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure are the main ticketing options for racegoers. For standard racedays, entry costs £18 for the Premier Enclosure and £12 for the Grandstand and Paddock.

For the highlight fixtures of the season this rises to £20 and £15 respectively. Concessions are available for senior citizens and students, who can gain entry into the Grandstand and Paddock for £8. Paying adults can bring children under 16 to Carlisle racing for free and on certain family fun days special trackside parking is available for £5 per car.
The ground floor public spaces of the new grandstand contain many options for enjoying some food and refreshments and as well as Red Rum Bar there is a family bar. Grandstand and Paddock badge holders can also access the Pre-Parade Ring where they can cast their eye over the horses in their attempts to pick a winner. Premier badge holders can enjoy all the facilities and features of the grandstand too in addition to the further facilities on offer in the Premier Enclosure, such as Swifts Restaurant and Patterson Bar. |
